Maharashtra literally
means 'the Great State'. It is one of India's largest states
in terms of both area and population. It is situated on
the west coast, stretching from the Arabian Sea, Western
Ghats, Deccan Plateau and into Central India.

Mumbai-
Over the years Mumbai has become India's nerve centre. It
has a cosmopolitan character.
St. George's Fort was built by the British. Prince
of wales Museum, University Buildings, Victoria Terminal,
Town Hall, Mint and High Court
give the city a 'European' look.
Gateway of India is Mumbai's most distinctive
monument standing at Apollo Bunder, high
by the sea TeenBatti, Parsi Towers of Silence
and Hazi Ali Mosque are other places of
interest.
Hanging Gardens, Marine Drive, Chowpatty Beach and the Race
Course are worth visiting.
Elephanta Island-is not to be missed with its famous rock-cut
temples from 7th to 8th century A.D.
Pune-
is distinctly Maharashtrian and decidedly the cultural captial
of the state.
Rajneesh Ashram is interesting to visit and Nallah garden
located there is lush and beautiful.
Raja Khelkar Museum has a quaint collection of Indian artefacts,
antiques, nutcrackers, musical instruments, lamps and carved
doors.
Mahabaleshwer
Panchgani-Lonavala-Khandala- are thickly forested lush green
hill-stations.
Aurangabad-
Panchakki is an ancient water mill made by 17th century
engineers.
Bibihka-
Maqbara is a mausoleum built by Aurangzeb's son
for his mother.
Sunher Mahal, Nehru Udyan, Daultabad, Girineshwer
Temple and Buddhist caves should
not be missed.
Ajanta and Ellora
caves- are more then 10 centuries old and
among the most important monuments in India. They are a
group of Jain Buddhist and Hindu
architectural caves.
